The earth is the Lord’s

God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. 

Gen. 1:10

Then God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.” And it was so. … And God saw that it was good.

The Lord your God is indeed God in heaven above and on earth below.

The ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is going to pass before you into the Jordan.

For thus says the Lord,
who created the heavens

And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence because of them; now I am going to destroy them along with the earth.”

God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.”

I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of heaven, and will give to your offspring all these lands; and all the nations of the earth shall gain blessing for themselves through your offspring,

Indeed, the whole earth is mine, but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the Israelites.

Exod. 19:5c-6 (see Deut. 10:14-15a)

You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot.

Human responsibility and limits

The heavens are the Lord’s heavens,
    but the earth he has given to human beings.

Psalm 115:16

You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

For six years you shall sow your land and gather in its yield; but the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie fallow, so that the poor of your people may eat; and what they leave the wild animals may eat. You shall do the same with your vineyard, and with your olive orchard. Six days you shall do your work, but on the seventh day you shall rest, so that your ox and your donkey may have relief, and your homeborn slave and the resident alien may be refreshed.

Since there will never cease to be some in need on the earth, I therefore command you, “Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbor in your land.”

Deut. 15:11

If you besiege a town for a long time, making war against it in order to take it, you must not destroy its trees by wielding an ax against them. Although you may take food from them, you must not cut them down. Are trees in the field human beings that they should come under siege from you? You may destroy only the trees that you know do not produce food; you may cut them down for use in building siegeworks against the town that makes war with you, until it falls.

Deut. 20:19-20

If you come on a bird’s nest, in any tree or on the ground, with fledglings or eggs, with the mother sitting on the fledglings or on the eggs, you shall not take the mother with the young.

Psalm 58:1-2

When the earth totters, with all its inhabitants,
    it is I who keep its pillars steady.

Ah, you who join house to house,

until there is room for no one but you,
    and you are left to live alone
    in the midst of the land!

The Lord of hosts has sworn in my hearing:
Surely many houses shall be desolate,
    large and beautiful houses, without inhabitant.
For ten acres of vineyard shall yield but one bath,
    and a homer of seed shall yield a mere ephah.

Isa.5:8-10

The earth lies polluted
    under its inhabitants;
for they have transgressed laws,
    violated the statutes,

Wisd.1:14

The Lord created human beings out of earth,

Earth personified

The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, along with their households—everyone who belonged to Korah and all their goods.

Divine control of natural elements

For a fire is kindled by my anger and burns to the depths of Sheol; 

it devours the earth and its increase and sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.

Deut. 32:22

Then the earth shook and trembled;
The foundations of heaven quaked and were shaken,
Because He was angry.

I Sam. 22:8 (also I Chron. 16:14, Psalm 18:7)

The Lord also thundered in the heavens,
    and the Most High uttered his voice. 
And he sent out his arrows, and scattered them;
    he flashed forth lightnings, and routed them.
Then the channels of the sea were seen,
    and the foundations of the world were laid bare
at your rebuke, O Lord,
    at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.

Psalm 18:7, 13-15

God thunders wondrously with his voice;
    he does great things that we cannot comprehend.
For to the snow he says, ‘Fall on the earth’;
    and the shower of rain, his heavy shower of rain,
serves as a sign on everyone’s hand,
    so that all whom he has made may know it. …

Psalm 135:7

When he utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightnings for the rain, and he brings out the wind from his storehouses.

Jer. 10:13 (see 51:15-16)

For lo, the one who forms the mountains, creates the wind, reveals his thoughts to mortals, makes the morning darkness, and treads on the heights of the earth— the Lord, the God of hosts, is his name!

Amos 4:13

See, the day of the Lord comes,
    cruel, with wrath and fierce anger,
to make the earth a desolation,
    and to destroy its sinners from it. …
Therefore I will make the heavens tremble,
    and the earth will be shaken out of its place,
at the wrath of the Lord of hosts
    in the day of his fierce anger.

Isa. 13:9, 13

Though the fig tree does not blossom,
    and no fruit is on the vines;
though the produce of the olive fails,
    and the fields yield no food;
though the flock is cut off from the fold,
    and there is no herd in the stalls,

Hab. 3:17-18

Therefore wait for me, says the Lord, for the day when I arise as a witness. For my decision is to gather nations, to assemble kingdoms, to pour out upon them my indignation, all the heat of my anger; for in the fire of my passion all the earth shall be consumed.

Zeph. 3:8

Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
