The Broken
by Piety Choi.
(36”x36”; mixed media
on canvas)
The original title of the piece was “The Broken”. I was inspired to create the piece while reflecting upon the precious sacrifice of Jesus Christ, whose broken, bleeding body on the cross gave birth to the church. The housing structure contains the fish, and recalls the ancient Christian confession of ichthus (“fish” in Greek), which is an acronym for the Savior, Jesus Christ, Son of God. The redeemed gather both in and around the church. Those whose life Christ made possible are represented through pieces of varying colors and shapes. My desire to be counted among the saved compelled me to draw in a small portrait of myself in the center left structure. An individual who commented on the piece stated, “I see in this art piece God’s desire and effort to provide a dwelling place for everyone.” This is in consonance with this current issue of The Living Pulpit.
