One Sits in the Middle of the City
by Piety Choi.
It was not long after I started working with the mixed media including sands that this painting dawned on me (original size: 24"x36"). My mind was not molded by any particular theme or programmatic agenda. I just recall having been enthralled by the plain scene of a man sitting outside of a large window of the school of art located in the inner city of Philadelphia. The urban light seemed to make his place darker, catapulting him into a remarkable contrast to the jungle of modern buildings. He was alone. I was led to dwell on the inevitable dark corners in today’s city brightly lit. The urban setting full of complexities and business seemed to strike up the loneliness of those who dwell in the glittering cities. I must have been drawn to such disparity that sits (or dwells) among those who yearn for rest. —Piety Choi
