In Deep Sea by Piety Choi.
(mixed media on canvas, 60" x 48")
This semi-abstract painting executed with mixed media on the canvas is inspired by the Gospel passage, in which the risen Lord came to his disciples who had gone back to their previous life to fish. They labored all night in vain without knowing that the Lord had risen. Jesus came to them and told them to cast the net. They obeyed and caught 153 fish. Someone must have counted them. For this painting, I imagined that the little fish gather and become a big fish, just as believers come together and become the body of Christ. Jesus gives every member of the body of Christ with his abundant grace and comfort. All children of Noah and Abraham bear the image of God, shining through divine abundance in them. All creatures on the land and in the sea dwell thanks to the life that flows from the Creator. The high mountains and the deep sea join as witnesses to how great God is. I thought of the blue color as signifying the deep sea. We may not be able to see through the waters, but underneath there is abundance, and the obedience of God's people will lead to the encounter with superabundance.—Piety Choi
